From cutting your renovation costs by eliminating the need for retiling, to elevating the aesthetic of any residential or commercial space, RPV Construct’s microcement service is your ticket to stunning floors, walls, and countertops.
What is microcement?
How is microcement different from other materials?
Microcement, sometimes also called “micro-screed” or “micro-topping”, is a fine-grain surface finish material made of a special combination of cement aggregates as well as powdered resin polymers and liquid polymers. Unlike regular cement surfaces, which need a thickness of at least a few centimetres, microcement finishes can have a thickness of just 3 millimetres, and have a host of other functional and aesthetic benefits.
Is microcement strong enough for a kitchen/bathroom benchtop?
Yes, when put on by an experienced applicator and sealed with appropriate sealer microcement can be a perfect benchtop finish.
Is microcement a good alternative to quartz or engineered stone benchtops?
Yes as there is no cutting or grinding of material so no dust. Microcement is put on with a trowel on site.
Advantages of microcement
- Cost: Unlike most other materials, microcement can be applied directly on a wide variety of substrates, without the need for the existing walls or flooring to be overhauled and prepared. Added to microcement’s long lifespan, RPV Construct’s skilled execution offers exceptional cost advantages for both new projects and renovations.
- Versatility: With waterproof sealants and anti-slip properties, microcement is ideal for showers, bathrooms, and pool decks. RPV Construct’s experts also deliver seamless finishes without expansion joints, making microcement great for walls, staircases, and even kitchen counters.
- Aesthetics: Unlike epoxy coatings, microcement surfaces can be painted and do not “yellow” or fade over time. RPV Construct renders any texture from matte to high-, low-, and medium-gloss, matching any stylistic need, whether modern, classic, rustic, natural, or beyond.
- Durability and ease of maintenance: Its exceptional compressive and tensile strength makes microcement an enduring option for any build, capable of lasting 15 years or more. Its mould-free properties and simple care with water and neutral detergents makes for no-fuss maintenance.
What to look for when hiring professionals to render microcement surfaces
Microcement is a remarkable material, but requires specific training and experience to ensure a professional, well-finished surface that will last a long time. Here’s why you shouldn’t choose any random contractor:
- Unscientific mix ratios: Incorrect aggregate-polymer ratios can result in premature cracks, poor binding to the substrate, and compromised performance.
- Inadequate surface preparation: While microcement can be used on many substrates, proper preparation of the underlying surface is still important. Irregularities and debris can affect the adhesion and final finish.
- Improper application: Microcement needs to be applied in layers, by hand, using a trowel. A lack of skill, patience, or meticulousness can lead to uneven or ugly surfaces, and potentially, water stagnation.
- Incorrect curing: Lasting surfaces require that each layer be allowed the right amount of time to cure before the next layer is applied. Rushing the process is why the average contractor’s work starts cracking and deteriorating prematurely.
- Poor sealing: Proper sealing is vital to protect the surface from water and regular wear and tear. Choosing a suboptimal sealant or a lack of skill with sealing affects both appearance and durability.
